Are you excited about moving to your new home, but not about the thought of sorting, packing and transporting your belongings? Should you move yourself, or should you hire a mover? The following seven tips can help make your move easier and less stressful.
Make a List
Make a list of everything you need to do so you can check off tasks as they are completed. Leave extra space for important notes. It will also help if you list the details of who will be helping you and when they’ll be arriving.
Decide Who Will Move You
You will need to decide whether to move yourself or hire a mover. If you decide to move yourself and plan to enlist the help of friends or family, make sure you ask them well in advance so they have time to check their calendars. If you choose to go with a mover, leave yourself enough time to research companies and get quotes. Moving companies are booked in advance, so you’ll need to book one as soon as possible.
Get a Head Start on Packing
Start Packing as soon as you know you’re moving. Chances are you have more belongings than you realize and you’ll need time to get them sorted, packed up and ready to go. Don’t be afraid to ask friends or family for help, but remember to ask them ahead of time.
Get Moving Boxes in Several Different Sizes
Get sturdy boxes in a variety of sizes so you can balance out the load of each one when you pack them. Heavy items should be packed in smaller boxes to make transport easier and to lessen the chance of the bottoms falling out.
Stock Up on Moving Supplies
To protect your breakables, make sure you have a good supply of cushioning materials on hand. Newsprint, disposable plates, bubble wrap, packing peanuts and even towels can provide protection. Don’t forget to write “Fragile” on the boxes to help ensure their safe transport.
Label Moving Boxes
It’s a good idea to label boxes with the room their contents belong in. For example, write “Kitchen” on boxes that have dishes, silverware, pots and pans, etc. Tell friends and family (or the movers) to put the boxes in the rooms that are written on them. This will save you time when you are unpacking.
Place Packed Boxes Close to Your Door
Stack boxes in an area that is close to your outside door. This will save time on moving day because everything will be in one place ready to go. It will also make it easy to see if you’ve forgotten anything.
Moving to a new home can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. You can turn your experience into a positive one by using the seven tips listed above. Planning in advance is the key to making your move as smooth as possible.
